Ohhhh… I Don’t Know
Those readers who know me are familiar with my somewhat unreasonable devotion to the Denver Broncos. My Broncos fandom comes legitimately. First, I had the good fortune that is being a little boy at the beginning of the great sports career that was John Elway’s. Additionally, I was encouraged to become an avid detester of Kansas City Chiefs fans (note that I did NOT say I hate the Chiefs… just their fans). My primary complaint through the years has been that fan zealotry of the type exhibited by the most loyal of Chiefs followers is normally reserved for teams that win something.
My devotion reached such dizzying heights that I, with Nostradamus-like foresight, signed myself up for Denver Broncos season tickets as a 14 year old. Sixteen years later, I was finally awarded the privilege of paying exorbitant amounts of money to see my favorite squad go 8-8 every year, to purchase $8 flat beer, and to bear witness to the regular choking away of certain playoff berths (at which time I would have been given the additional privilege of spending even more money). Perhaps I am bad luck. Perhaps I shouldn’t have moved to Denver, as I have jinxed my favorite team. Perhaps…
There is no shortage of opinion on recent Broncos draft pick and current 4th string QB Tim Tebow. He’s the next John Elway (according to Woody Paige of the Denver Post). He’s couldn’t carry John Elway’s…. ummm…. helmet (according to Dave Krieger, also of the Post). He apparently hits a baseball pretty well (according to a Memphis high school coach). And, without playing a down, he leads the NFL in jersey sales and apparently is the ONLY recent NFL draftee with his own t-shirt (thanks to @PostBroncos, Lindsay Jones of the DP). Prognosticators are evenly split on whether he’ll be a bench-warming water boy or a solid NFL player. That’s A LOT of noise! All of this is just background to my point(s):

- The guy won a lot of college football games.
- All this talk of throwing motions and such seems the product of 24 hour sports coverage. There just isn’t anything enough to talk about. Does anyone remember Bernie Kosar?
- I am not an NFL football coach and, at last check, am not the coach of the Broncos, but I feel fairly confident that I would not have drafted a QB in any of the Broncos situations. I just don’t think it was a team need (see how many QB’s are in that picture?).
Perhaps more to the point however:
- Tim Tebow is apparently Christian. Somehow this is news. There are successful people in all fields who are just like Tim Tebow. They don’t get the attention that he does because their co-workers don’t have regular run-ins with law enforcement for being misogynist turds.
- Despite the point above, I feel, with a degree of religious certainty, that Jesus does not care whether Tim Tebow wins football games and has not, at any time, intervened on his behalf in the outcome of a sporting event. Some do not agree with me or the concept.
- He has apparently turned down multi-million dollar endorsement deals saying he prefers to focus on football. But he has not turned them all down (Helllllooooooo Nike!). He would have been better off saying nothing.
- Despite the point above, the commercial Tebow did during last year’s Super Bowl for Focus on the Family irked me. However, that’s because Focus on the Family irks me. The organization does not irk some others. Neither did the commercial.
- A Google image search for Tim Tebow produces some interesting results.
I don’t actually care about these last five points at all, but those are the issues that seem to divide people on the “Tim Tebow Issue.” The bottom line, from the perspective of a rabid Broncos fan, is this: If he gets in the game, he’d better be good and the Broncos better start winning football games and they’d better start doing it now. Maybe Tim Tebow is part of this, in which case, I’m all for Tim Tebow. Maybe he’s not, in which case I’m pretty peeved because I would have liked to have seen other needs addressed in the recent NFL draft.
Palaver’s Plugs
The Palaver made some new friends this weekend and as a result, I thought I might take a moment to point you in the general direction of Grogger. Grogger has created a new way to blog called a Group Blog:
